The International Basic Safety Standards and the Euratom Council Directive of 1996 for protection of man and environment against ionizing radiation forces the Non-Nuclear Industry to investigate the consequences of the presence of natural radionuclides in the processed materials and in the waste streams. In order to inform the industry and to provide a forum for exchange with regulatory authorities a symposium was held from 8-10 September 1997 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. An overview of this symposium is given below.
