A steep price fall in the raw material markets in August led to a sizeable drop in finished steel production costs. However, suppliers were unable to keep prices up and restore margins due to weak demand for steel used in construction. Margins of CIS billet and HR steel suppliers have been falling for the second month in a row. The drop in global iron ore prices will bring steel production costs in Ukraine and Russia down by $15?20/t in September, given a time lag in the raw material price formula.
