摘要

For years now, at least since 1995, Germany's retail sector has been waiting for consumption to pick up. While it's true that exports are now going strong, for the retail industry - and specifically clothing and footwear - the real turnaround is still to come. But 1997 - did usher in a slight improvement: since then, sales declines have been levelling out, so there seems reason to hope that 2000 will see figures above zero. During the first quarter, consumption edged forward by 0.9% -once again trailing all other main economic indicators. And shoe retailing fell back by 4%. It seems that people were still undecided about spending priorities, and uncertain about future income. Despite another tumble in July, sales are now stabilising - to the tune of 0% growth in the shoe retail sector up to and including July. We traders have now learned to live with the monthly sales roller-coaster, although we still get queasy.
