One recurring theme in talking to ag equipment salespeople over many years has been how important price was to the farmer. I cannot tell you how many times I heard about a sale lost because the competitor came in with a lower price. Salespeople have been telling sales managers and dealers for years that they should find ways to lower the price or customers will not buy. Farmers have been telling salespeople for years their prices are too high or that the competition has a lower price. Despite all this, billions of dollars of equipment have been sold over these years. If they had all been discounted to the bone (as many salespeople would have proposed), manufacturers and dealers would have gone out of business by now. They could not have survived on the paltry margins farmers supposedly wanted to allow them. Yet they are still around and are more prosperous than ever. The evidence says farmers will pay high prices for equipment and allow dealers to make good money.
