A study on phosphorus utilization from different organic and inorganic sources in Japanese quail.

The availability of P of common feedstuffs was studied in two experiments using Japanese quail. In experiment 1, monocalcium phosphate (MCP), dicalcium phosphate (DCP), monosodium phosphate (MNP), wheat, barley and maize were used as P-sources and added to a low-P basal diet. In experiment 2, mixtures of two P-sources each were tested: MCP + DCP, MCP + MNP, DCP + maize, wheat + barley and wheat + maize. Quail chicks were fed a common starter diet until the third week of age. Thereafter groups of two male birds were transferred to small experimental cages where they received the experimental diets. After a 7-day pre-experimental period, one bird was removed from each cage and P-balance of the remaining individual birds was tested over a 4-day period from 29 to 32 days of age. 42 and 36 birds were in experiment 1 and in experiment 2, respectively. Body weight, body weight gain and feed intake were recorded. P-utilization was calculated on the basis of the difference of P-intake and P-excretion. Effects of the diets were analysed by a one-factorial analysis of variance. The effect of the diets on body weight, body weight gain and feed intake was low in both experiments. P-utilization in the basal diet was 94% in experiment 1. Relatively high utilization of 60.0 and 66.0% were obtained in the test diets containing wheat and maize, respectively, while barley showed the lowest utilization (34.0%). The experimental groups containing MCP, DCP and MNP showed P-utilizations between 47.0 and 53.0%. The effect of the test diets on body weight, weight gain and feed intake was also low in the second experiment. The utilization of P in the basal diet was lower than in experiment 1 (69.0%). The combination of DCP + MNP showed the highest utilization (76.0%) and the groups fed wheat + barley and MCP + maize the lowest means (53.0 and 50.0%, respectively). P-utilization was highly variable among groups of mineral and plant components, and means of experimental groups containing P of plant origin were higher and those of mineral origin lower than expected. In combinations of different P-sources where the P-utilization of the individual components diverged largely, the P-utilization took an intermediate position. A large part of the variation among the experimental groups could be explained by differences in P-intake.
