Psychiatrists may not be lawmakers, but their treatment recommendations do carry the force of law in increasing numbers of cases in Canada, the United States, and other countries. So says Erick Fabris in Tranquil Prisons, reporting on the state-ordered imposition of medications to individuals who exhibit psychotic or mentally troubled behaviors. He juxtaposes this trend with a counter-trend that he says is also gathering strength: "Anti-psychiatry" and "treatment survivor" networks, which are emerging and drawing more and more attention.
