The Internet of Elsewhere: The Emergent Effects of a Wired World. Cyrus Farivar (technology journalist, National Public Radio). Piscataway NJ: Rutgers University Press, May 2011, 264 pages, $25.95 (also e-book). Host of the "Spectrum" radio program (Deutsche Welle English) looks at the role of the Internet as a catalyst in transforming communications, politics, and economics in four distinct societies: Estonia (where Skype was invented, as well as a digital ID system and e-voting), Iran (the first country in the world to arrest a blogger in 2003), South Korea (the most wired country on the planet, with faster and less expensive broadband than anywhere in the U.S.) and Senegal (one of sub-Saharan Africa's best chances for greater Internet access). The Internet can have positive and often surprising effects, but it can also be co-opted or restricted.
