摘要

A four-month-old male intact domestic shorthair kittenwas presented for deformity of the right thoracic limb.Severe carpal varus was noted, and palpation of theventral thorax revealed the sternum to be dividedcaudally. The heartbeat was palpable beneath the skin inthe expanse created by the sternal division. Incompletecaudal sternal cleft with diaphragmatic hernia wasdiagnosed. At surgery, herniation of the gall bladder andportions of the liver into the thoracic cavity were noted.The medial aspects of the sternal bars were abraded withrongeurs, and interrupted sutures were placed aroundthe sternebrae to close the thorax following placement ofa thoracostomy tube. The diaphragm and abdomen werealso closed primarily. The kitten died postoperatively andwas found to have acute pulmonary and cardiac lesions.Primary surgical closure is possible, and patients shouldbe monitored carefully in the postoperative period.
