The origins of the David Brown organisation are rooted in gear manufacturing. The founder from which the company took its name started in business as a pattern maker in Huddersfield in the 1860s. By 1873, he had expanded into making wooden gears. These wooden gears were used in the woollen and worsted mills in the area. Wood was chosen in the early days because, not only were the cogs cheaper to make than the cast-iron gears of the day, but they ran so much quieter than the metal equivalent. Wood was also quite capable of transmitting the low-power requirements of the day.
