摘要

Peter J. Longfoot looks at the latest generation of elevated-sprocket designs. As we saw last month in the first part of this feature, the 'high-drive' or elevated sprocket concept for track-type tractors has been around for a very long time. But it engendered very limited interest and probably even less commercial success. So why did Caterpillar begin to take the idea seriously - a move that eventually changed the whole notion of what a crawler tractor should be? Back in 1954, soon after the D9 had been placed on the market, the Caterpillar Tractor Company (today Caterpillar Inc) realised customers would eventually demand an even larger tractor. Consequently, the company's Research & Development Department began considering designs. By the mid-1960s, the demand for more power had become a reality. Caterpillar met that demand with the DD9G, which we described in the previous issue. To recap, it consisted of two D9s joined together either side-by-side or in tandem to give a total output of around 700hp. This arrangement was unwieldy and very expensive to maintain.
