The Bristol crawler tractor, revered by smallholders and horticulturalists, and used second-hand by many an allotment holder in the 1950s and '60s, became something of a British legend. And yet it seems as if the seeds of its development may well have been sown in France on the battlefields of the Western Front during the First World War.
