The days are getting longer and, on rare occasions, the sun shows itself and appears to be getting a little stronger - just about detectable! It's February 1969 and winter is halfway over - well hopefully anyway. Our intrepid peasant has assessed the stocks of hay, straw and grain and has come to the conclusion that neither the cattle or the sheep (or himself) will actually starve. The consumption of these items off the feed inventory has to be carefully gauged against the possible weather conditions between now and 'turn-out' - that's when the cattle can be turned out to grass in the spring; whenever that season decides to put in an appearance. To have some of each left is never a problem. Such a situation might even allow some hay and straw to be sold to some unfortunate who did run-out!
