There was a lot happening in March 1972 and most of it didn't bode well for the wide world beyond Home Farm in Peasantville. Industry was on a three-day week and Northern Ireland was making news. The miners, demanding an extra ￡6 per week, had started picketing to prevent supplies of coal reaching the power stations and several plants had had to shut down from a lack of fuel. Ted Heath's government responded by imposing a three-day week in an attempt to cut industry's electricity requirements so as to keep the home lights burning. None of this had a direct effect on our peasant because the generator he had bought in the 1950s was still sitting at the ready in its shed. As it turned out, it was not required.
