In Germany, green hydrogen is claimed to be the panacea for the energy transition in those cases where the direct use of electric energy does not make sense. These include material applications in industry, but also such applications as fuel for mobility on water, in the air, or on land, and particularly in logistics. The ambitions are impressive, but the potentials are less so. At the beginning of March 2021, an interesting comparison was doing the rounds in the champagne-fueled discussion about the smallest and lightest of all particles: if we combined all the generation capacities for renewable energy in Germany - in other words, wind power, Photovoltaics (PV), bio-mass, and hydroelectric power - we would, assuming 70% efficiency for the electrolyzer plants, be able to cover the entire demand of the steel industry for green hydrogen. However, there would then be nothing left over for electric cars or to keep the lights on at home or to run the computers at the workplace. All these would have to be powered by fossil fuels, a conclusion that can also be drawn from a quick glance at the data on generation capacities compiled by Energy-Charts.
