The future of the automotive industry will be defined by software. A recent Berylls study has shown that, by the end of this decade, software will account for nearly 60% of all R&D spending. The reasons for this are currently omni-present in the news and in the agendas of automotive C-suites: autonomous driving, electrification, shared mobility, AI and many more. However, the established OEM R&D organizations are still designed in the same way as they have been for nearly 30 years. They are designed to deal with individual components in distinct domains and therefore, are not designed to deal with the complexity of modern software functions working across the domains. The results are increasing costs, quality issues and the risk of being outdone by new competition from Silicon Valley or China. Using a development approach that focuses on single components creates an isolated process with a lot of time spent doubling back when it comes to developing hardware and software. Following the teachings of system-orientation, OEMs should think of their product as a system of systems, consisting of software and hardware. System orientation helps in customer orientation and circumvents Conway's law, according to which products always represent the system boundaries of the creating organization. In addition, this helps to create end-to-end responsibility and reduce coordination efforts.
