Way back in 2016, Audi and BMW began talking publicly about the need to radically break away from distributed architectures and move toward centralized and service-oriented architectures based on multipurpose, High-performance Computers (HPCs). The industry is now widely committed to this approach. Carmakers have the opportunity to replace ten or more ECUs with a single HPC. With their tier-1 and tier-2 hardware partners, carmakers have been integrating the functions of one or a few ECUs into bigger, more capable ECUs for many years. So we were surprised to learn recently from top executives in our industry that multiple carmakers have been struggling to make HPC implementations work. "It's a universal problem," says Wolfgang Bernhart, Senior Partner at the global consultancy Roland Berger. "The OEMs underestimated the extent of the integration effort and the communication complexities between HPCs and other parts of the vehicle."
