Whoever speaks of software-centric cars is normally referring to the perspective of highly automated driving up to robotic cars. The prime example of what can be done seems, at the moment, to be Tesla: The newcomer has a very strong base in terms of electrification, the more or less proprietary computer architecture and software in their vehicles. The early and consistent merging of these topics definitely brings advantages, in particular the customizing of software to dedicated hardware. A presumably not-to-be-ignored part of the Californian company’s image results from the fact that they were able to develop the technology without suffering from legacy issues and cumbersome organizational structures.
