Dr. h. c. Richard van Basshuysen died on September 30, 2020 at the age of 88 after a brief illness. The automotive industry, the Springer Nature publishing group and, in particular, ATZ and MTZ magazines are mourning the loss of one of their most creative personalities, who remained very active up to an advanced age. After completing an apprenticeship as a motor mechanic and taking a degree in mechanical engineering at what was then the State Engineering School Wolfenbüttel (now Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences), Richard van Basshuysen began his career as a research associate at Aral. Ten years later he moved to NSU and, after the company was taken over by Audi in 1969, he became head of engine and gearbox development and was jointly responsible for unforgettable models such as the Prinz 4, NSU 1000, NSU 1200, Ro 80 and K 70. In 1976, he was appointed head of the Audi development division in Neckarsulm and from 1988 to 1990 he was responsible for the new comfort class of cars. He wrote a new chapter in engineering history with the development and production launch of car diesel engines with direct fuel injection. He was a creative and dedicated engineer who ensured that powerful, fuel-efficient and fun-to-drive diesel engines in cars became an unparalleled success. Sadly, his technical successors were responsible for the criminal manipulation of these diesel engines, something which caused immeasurable harm both to the engines themselves and to the automotive industry as a whole.
