CHINA HAS LONG BEEN A CORNERSTONE of many companies' manufacturing and sourcing programs; and one of the main reasons is low wages. But things are changing.Ironically, but not surprisingly, China's great success as a "low-cost country" has begun to make it less low cost. The average hourly wage rate in China is only about 9 percent of that in developed western economies. However, 13 Chinese provinces recently raised their minimum wage level by an average of 20 percent. In addition, China's wage rate is rising faster than other Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries.
