New introductions have proliferated as a result of modern plant exploration, enriching botanic gardens and private collections. Not only do these novelties offer opportunities for horticulture, they can help address long-standing taxonomic questions.Among recent collections are Acer sterculiaceum (pungent maple or Himalayan sycamore) and A. tsinglingense (Qinling maple), two species in section Lithocarpa. The purpose of this article is to use these species to demonstrate the value of repeatedly collecting representatives of a group of plants to clarify questions of identity.
