THERE IS NO truer sign of springtime in Guernsey than the sight of daffodils bursting into life in hedgerows and scraps of derelict field or bunched abundantly in roadside Hedge Veg stalls. These ebullient markers in the landscape are all that remainsof a once-thriving local economy, now faded into the past like mist rising from the sea.Today, Cornwall produces some 95% of the daffodils sold worldwide and Guernsey's role as a producer of daffodils as both cutflowers and bulbs is forgotten. However, it is possible that Guernsey was the first provider of daffodils to the London markets at Covent Garden. Guernsey historian Peter Girard (1939), working largely from local recollections, states that the Caledonia Nursery in St Peter Port sent daffodils in 1864, six years before the first recorded export of the crop from the Scilly Isles.
