THE COLLECTION OF winter-through-to-spring-flowering colchicums at Gothenburg Botanical Garden, Sweden, is spectacular, and surely the most extensive presently cultivated. It has been rigorously appraised by botanists and horticulturists for more thanfour decades.A former director of the garden, Norwegian botanist Per Wendelbo, was instrumental inbuilding up the collection during his tenure from 1965 until his premature death in 1981. He has a spring-flowering Iranian Colchicum, C. wendelboi, named after him. An authority on the flora of southwest Asia, he made field trips to Iran, Afghanistan, Turkey and Israel between 1950 and 1978, greatly enriching the garden's bulb accessions.
