The startling image traveled all around the world: In the spring of 2019 hundreds of people were seen standing in line on the snowy slopes of Mount Everest for up to an hour and a half, waiting to embark on the final ascent to the summit. The dream they all shared: to stand on the highest point on the planet, a place relatively few people have ever reached. A major difference today is that more people may be lined up to wait their turn on any given day than the total number of people who climbed Everest in the first three decades after Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay completed the first successful ascent in 1953. Life and society are always changing: More and more people are seeking to fulfill ever-more-ambitious personal goals. In a survey conducted in 2015, more than half of the respondents said they would be willing to have implants inserted into their body to surpass the limits that nature has placed on human ability. That raises the question of just where those limits lie: Could a person arbitrarily decide to extend them-and if so, by how much? We're constantly hearing about people pushing their limits and training their minds and bodies in an effort to go to the extreme. Such intrepid individuals demonstrate where the limits currently are and through the example of their daring actions raise the prospect of pushing them even further. On the following pages some of these very people share how they've succeeded in coming so far, taking us with them to the top of the world, to the bottom of the sea, and on a wild land rocket ride at speeds faster than any human being has ever endured before.
