A Californian vineyard is using both live sheep and recycled woollen carpet in a combined approach to weed control. With carpet strips varying between 23 and 60 centimetres wide, the strips are laid down adjacent to vines at the Napa Valley's Nord Vineyards to prevent weed growth, while sheep are allowed into the vineyard to graze on weeds. Nord Vineyard Services manager Julie Nord says the idea surfaced at a Christmas party where a Bellbridge Carpets representative was trying to find ways to recyclewool carpet, which cannot be melted down and reused like acrylic carpet.
