Cargo fires have long been a cause for concern in the maritime sector; the consequences of fire on board a vessel can be lethal. In 2018, Maersk Honam caught fire in the Arabian Sea, five crew members perished in the disaster, and cost the company millions of dollars in lost cargo, leading to long litigation battles. Six fires on board container vessels in the first three months of 2019 have further concentrated the collective minds of the industry and that over the last year there has been an average of at least one cargo fire a month. It was a subject that was tackled by a highly skilled panel of experts during London International Shipping Week 2019 at Clyde & Co's offices and, there was a feeling that despite major concerns, the issue is finally being addressed by the industry, although there is still some way to go.
