In the long term,a report from BofA Global Research finds that the two predominant themes that will determine the path forward for Europe's energy industry are energy independence and the energy transition.However,even though the EU-27 and the UK both plan to phase out fossil fuels in favor of clean energy,the increase in energy prices brought on by the Russia-Ukraine crisis has highlighted the difficulty in moving away from fossil fuels.The EU-27 is rather heavily dependent on Russian oil and gas,and thus its plan to cut its consumption of Russian gas by two-thirds for the coming winter will likely face major challenges.In fact,the European Commission's REPowerEU plan,which aims to diversify the EU's dependence on Russian NG,indicates that the bloc will likely have to use coal-fired power generation.Meanwhile,the UK is relatively less reliant on oil and gas on Russia thanks to its North Sea production but has still been facing increased energy costs.
