Now more than ever, the powertrain industry is divided in its opinions. Despite so many manufacturers pledging their devotion to all-out electrification, I am certain that behind the scenes there are engineers shaking their heads, truly believing that there is another way out of the mess that the world has put itself in. I'm sure there will be plenty of you reading this thinking, 'Well, actually, it's always been like that.' And maybe you're right. But I do feel that the industry is more overt in its discussion now. During the turbocharging phase of the late 1980s and early 1990s, and the more recent downsizing trend that saw Ford and VW 1.0 engines come to the fore, it at least felt like there was some sort of consensus on the best technology to move us forward.
