By "taking it down to the molecular level" (or one-billionth of a meter), nanotechnology's potential spans all areas of human endeavor, from health to food and energy production to shelter, waste treatment, and communications. Business opportunities abound. However, hopes for the potential benefits of the technology have been tempered by concerns about the risks, which have been described in recent reports and testimony before the US Congress.
