The main reason for business resistance to sustainability principles is no longer any active opposition to the idea. The chief impediment is management's failure to know what should be done and how to go about it, according to three corporate consultants at Ecos Corp. Based on their experience with clients, particularly DuPont and its consulting arm DuPont Safety Resources, former environmental campaigners Paul Gilding and Rick Humphries, and Murray Hogarth, former journalist, are proposing that most companies rely on traditional workplace safety and health as the entry point into unfamiliar territory. They explain the safety-sustainability continuum in a discussion paper, Safe Companies, posted on the Web at www.ecoscorporation.com/think/safety/safe_compames.pdf. The authors argue that companies can effectively climb the ladder to be safe for their neighbors, safe for their customers, safe for the environment, and safe for their shareholders.
