At a ceremony at United Nations headquarters in New York City to mark its launch as an independent institution, the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) handed out a roster naming companies that already follow its voluntary guidelines for reporting environmental, social, and economic performance. The list contains 109 organizations around the world from Aeroports de Paris to Yasuda Fire and Marine Insurance. The number of adherents seems to grow week by week. From the outset, GRI intended to devise a reporting format so analysts and investors could compare firms' operations from country to country (see BATE, November 1997). The supposition was that transparency could be its own reward. Standard reports would prod under-performing companies to change their practices much the way the uniform revelation of data from individual plants spurred manufacturers to reduce their toxic emissions. Today, ideas about public sustainability reports are more complicated than that.
