The draft version of a review conducted by the working group on consumer protection in the global market of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Consumer Policy Committee (Copolco) has found that unless something is done to bring order to the situation, efforts of businesses to be socially and environmentally responsible may suffer in "the confusing sea of variable quality initiatives." Based on its credibility and efforts so far, ISO is in a good position to develop voluntary corporate responsibility management system standards, the group concludes. The working group recommends that ISO move quickly into the area. After incorporating comments on the draft, the final version of the report will be discussed by ISO Copolco at its meeting on 10 June in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. The Copolco meeting is taking place at the same time that ISO's Technical Committee on Environmental Management (TC 207) is holding its annual plenary this year in Johannesburg, South Africa.
