The UK Chemical Industries Association (CIA) believes that the new way contemplated by Brussels to test chemicals that were put on the market before 1981 poses a real danger of being excessive and impracticable. CIA says it will damage the competitiveness of the EU chemical industry and its customers, particularly smaller companies. Germany's Chemical Industry Association (Verband der Chemischen Industrie VCI) also says the best interests of the small businesses in the industry, some 36,000 of them, have to be protected by examining "all realistic" options to avoid unnecessary burdens.
