Private talks on electronic waste takeback strategies in the US are said to be moving forward despite the fact that little concrete agreement can be claimed by the parties. A year after they began, the negotiators sense a breakthrough of sorts - industry says it is willing to focus henceforth strictly on programs with front-end financing, that is, on the inclusion of the cost of managing waste in the price of purchasing new equipment. The national trade association of the Electronic Industry Alliance (EIA) is secure in the belief that charging consumers a sum for recycling when they return obsolete equipment will work in the US. But EIA is making a concession to state regulatory authorities and others who refuse to consider programs based on end-of-life fees.
