Emerald ash borer (EAB),Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire, is an invasive pest introduced from Asia that attacks ash trees. It was first introduced in North America sometime in the 1990s. Adult beetles are about 3/8- to 5/8-inch long with metallic green wing covers and a coppery red or purple abdomen. Males are smaller than females and have fine hairs on the ventral side of the thorax. They are active from late May through early September, but are most common in June and July. The larvae live under the bark of the tree and feed in the vascular cambium on the nutrient-rich conductive tissues. The adult beetles leave a "D"-shaped exit hole, approxi-mately 1/8-inch wide when they emerge from the bark in June.
