Styrene is mainly produced from the hydrogenation of ethylbenzene with the presence of styrene. The aromatic is also a coproduct of propylene oxide (PO) production. Commodities news publisher ICIS that since 2012, a significant volume of European styrene supply has come from PO/styrene monomer units. Two thirds of global styrene consumption come from the production of polystyrene (PS) and expandable polystyrene (EPS), with other end uses including the production acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), styrene-acrylonitrile, and styrene butadiene rubber resins along with styrene butadiene latex, styrenated polyesters, and unsaturated polyester resins.
