Polyethylene terephthalate (PET), the clear plastic from which many beverage containers is made, is already commonly recycled. But the process is largely mechanical - the PET is washed, ground into small particles, and mixed with "virgin" PET. The resulting "new" plastic is not usable as packaging, and typically finds its way back to the consumer in the form of clothes or carpet. According to Dennis Sabourin, executive director of the National Association for PET Container Resources, a trade organization, two methods for recycling PET via a chemical reaction exist, but both are energy intensive and cost prohibitive. A new process under development by researchers at the IBM Almaden Research Center (San Jose, California, USA) and Stanford University (Stanford, California) may change the nature of PET recycling.
