Spot product prices posted marginal ups and downs in the week to Jan. 13. A rash of refinery problems put a floor under prices in a market that was drowned in massive weekly inventory builds. Gasoline sentiment waned as stock levels continued to swell. The US EIA's weekly inventory report on Wednesday showed that stocks jumped 5.0MM bbl to 240.5MM bbl in the week to Jan. 6, far exceeding projections for a 1.6MM-bbl build and hitting the highest since July. On the Gulf Coast, differentials came under pressure by soaring regional stocks, but the downside was limited by refinery outages and maintenance. Gasoline-making FCCUs reportedly were knocked offline at ExxonMobil's Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Beaumont, Texas refineries, and Marathon Petroleum shut down a crude unit at its Garyville, LA plant and was scheduled to commence an overhaul at its Texas City, TX refinery. Furthermore, a fire at Shell's Deer Park, TX refinery reportedly forced a hydrotreater to shut down. Prices in the Midwest markets were split, with the Group Three hub up and the Chicago hub sharply down. The Chicago market had been bolstered in recent weeks by refinery outages and strong refinery buying. On the West Coast, differentials in California's Los Angeles market tumbled back from a strong increase notched at the end of the previous week that had been triggered by a refinery outage. The week inventory report, which showed a sharp regional build, injected bearishness into the market. Prices settled lower by the period's end. In the New York Harbor (NYH), gasoline and RBOB prices slipped as stocks rose and shipments arrived from Europe.
