Over the past few years, polypropylene (PP) production margins in both North America and Europe have risen substantially. There are a number of reasons for this: one is that feedstock has been readily available and inexpensive, especially in the US. Mixed-feed crackers in the country have favored propane feeds—which yield a high proportion of propylene when cracked—over the past few years; according to a report from Jacobs Consulting, US crackers have steadily increased propane use from 19.5 of cracker feeds in 2014 to 22.6 in 2015 and 23.8 in the first three quarters of 2016. Over the same period, ethane's share has fallen from 65.7 to 62 and then 61.2. The proportion of butane and naphtha in the feed has remained steady over the period. Propylene availability has also been improved in the US by rising gasoline production, increasing output of refinery-grade propylene as a byproduct from gasoline-making fluid catalytic cracking units. Dow Chemical's new 750K-mt/y propane dehydrogenation (PDH) plant in Freeport, Texas has also added to propylene supplies. At the same time, polypropylene capacity growth has been at a standstill. The US has not built any new PP capacity for a number of years, and capacity has in fact shrunk as both Sunoco and Phillips Sumika have taken units offline.
