Sokol misrepresents whatempathy means and creates the idea that imperturbability is incompatible with genuine clinical empathy.Empathy is a complexmultidimensional conceptthat has moral, cognitive, emotive, and behavioural components. It involves the ability to understand the patient's situation from his or her perspective and communicate that understanding in a helpful (therapeutic) way.2 It is a powerful clinical skill that can be taught with specificcommunicationskillstraining.lt is notthe ability to cry with someone butto convey to that person thatyou are attuned to his or her emotions. It does not require the doctorto have those feelings too. Sokol is describing sympathy and not empathy.
