Shared decision making is increasingly the norm. Stiggelbout and colleagues claim that it is an ethical imperative, and characterise it as a complexintervention, in which patients and clinicians make decisions together, as partners, usingthe best available evidence.Studies of the experiences of health professionals as patients show that it is not the decisions themselves butthe way they are made that causes problems. Health professionals reported thatthe experience of beinga patient made them feel vulnerable and disempowered.GPs who had been seriously ill said they felt anxiety, uncertainty, shock, and loss of control. This made them realise how disempowered patients can feel and made them more aware of the social aspects of healthcare.
