The war in Ukraine rapidly changed the trajectory of US flat rolled steel prices, as steelmakers scrambled to source pig iron and scrap. US scrap prices jumped $125-200 /l.ton in March, depending on grade and region, coinciding with a $310 /t or 52.5 m/m jump in pig iron prices. Steel mills quickly reacted by announcing price increases, which propelled HR coil prices to a record w/w increase of $182 /s.ton to $1,139 /s.ton, FOB mill, on 16 March. The market is concerned over uncertainty surrounding future pig iron imports from Russia and Ukraine. Buyers are worried about production stops as well as finance and logistics issues.
