GPs are the most appropriate gatekeepers for managing low back pain in the community. Many GPs across the UK currently have rapid access to triage services run by NHS physiotherapists, who are able to assess patients in a timely fashion. These physiotherapists undergo specialist training, and many have direct access to advanced imaging if needed. It is a system that works well, especially as GPs are often able to sift out patients they know are motivated enough to self manage.
