Spot product prices largely increased in the week to Jan. 29, despite a lack of bull factors, as stronger futures benchmarks put a floor under the prompt markets. Aiding the upside was downed refinery capacity on the Gulf Coast and falling stock levels for middle distillates. Gasoline's supply length continued to grow, keeping a lid on the market. The US EIA's inventory report on Wednesday for the week ending Jan. 22 showed gasoline inventories rose 3.5MM bbl to 248.5MM bbl, up for the 11th straight period. Analysts had expected an increase of 1.5MM bbl. Gulf Coast differentials found some late-week support on news that Motiva Enterprises had shut down a naphtha process complex-including a hydrotreater, reformer, and isomerization unit-due to a malfunction at its 603K-b/d Port Arthur, Texas refinery. The outage, which occurred on Thursday and was expected to last for about 10 days, added to the region's growing list of offline units and plants, as several local refineries have recendy commenced turnarounds or hit snags. However, traders noted, the impact to prices likely would be minimal as regional supplies were abundant. In the Midwest, prices came under heavy pressure amid abundant stocks and aggressive selling. In the Group Three hub, players built up stocks with stronger contracts seen ahead. 'These guys are trying to build inventories into the March/April roll,' a trader said. Also, the Chicago market remained in the doldrums, with prices hitting another fresh record low, since Platts started the assessment in Sept. 2009.
