It appears that India's courts are taking a "shoot first and ask questions later" approach to improving air quality. After last year imposing a blanket ban on diesel vehicles with an engine capacity of more than 2 L in New Delhi and the surrounding areas, India's Supreme Court has now rolled back the ban and allowed the vehicles back into the capital—for a price. New diesel vehicles over the size threshold are now to be permitted, but they will have to pay a tax, called a "green cess" equal to 1% of the retail price of each vehicle.
