The stiff headwinds that have troubled Europe's oil majors (see p. 5 of the Aug. 1 Digest) have taken a toll on the region's midsized firms as well. Austrian energy company OMV has reported that its adjusted operating profit—that is, clean current cost of supplies earnings before interest and taxes, which discounts special items and inventory changes—came to €214MM ($239MM), down 43 on the year. Though with virtually every company's profits down sharply, it hardly seems a fair metric to compare earnings to year-ago figures. In any case, OMV exceeded expectations, surpassing the average forecast of analysts polled by Reuters of €190MM ($211MM) by a significant margin.
