GPs will not suffer excessive disruption when they take control of most of the NHS budget as part of the government's shake up of the health service, England's health secretary has said.Andrew Lansley, giving evidence to the parliamentary health select committee on 20 July in a one-off evidence session, said that doctors were looking forward to the changes as an "empowerment," not as an "upheaval."MPs on the new health select committee-formed since the UK general election in May-quizzed Mr Lansley about the impact of the white paper published earlier this month (BMJ 2010;341:c3796,14 Jul), which set out how GPs will be given more responsibility for spending as primary care trusts and strategic health authorities are phased out by 2013.
