In order to handle the rising volumes of condensates that are being produced from US shale plays, a number of companies are planning to build condensate splitters along the Gulf Coast. According to RBN Energy's Sandy Fielden, however, there are potential problems in marketing the splitters' output—particularly the naphtha that makes up 60 of the yield from condensate splitting. There are three main outlets for naphtha in the US at the present, but all three are already well supplied. One option is to sell the product to refineries to be blended into the gasoline pool—but Fielden expects minimal opportunities for this in the near future as US refineries are currently processing large volumes of shale oil which is exceptionally rich in gasoline-and naphtha-range material. Even in the case of plants processing heavy Canadian crude, naphtha will be a difficult sell as the diluent that is mixed with this oilsands crude is very similar to naphtha, so most refiners are not expected to be on the market for significant volumes in the near future.
