In early 2006, the U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC) received the opportunity to transition subset of technologies developed under the Army's Robotic Follower Advanced Technology Demonstration (ATD) to current force Tactical Wheeled Vehicles (TWVs). Termed the Convoy Active Safety Technologies (CAST) Program, the technology transition is an effort to develop a low-cost suite of technologies that enhance Soldier safety and situational awareness through automation of the driving function.
