When the renegade computer Hal hijacked a spacecraft in the classic "2001: A Space Odyssey," the year was 1968 and robotic ethics were largely confined to the minds of science fiction writers. Now, intelligent mobile systems have made their way into civilian and military life, working at industrial plants, cleaning houses, exploring outer space and the deep sea and defusing bombs in war zones. And while robots are already on the battlefield, there is no rulebook that dictates what they can do and what they shouldn't do there, and no rules exist for the people who design them. Dr. Ron Arkin, a professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology's College of Computing, is on a mission to help develop a code of ethics for robotic warfare.
