Service members and their families who have had the misfortune to receive orders to a new duty station in 2021 are encountering the most difficult moving conditions in memory. Those now making a permanent change-of-station move report that the hot housing market is pushing housing costs into the stratosphere, and those who have decided to try to rent say the cost of a decent place to live is exceeding their monthly basic allowance for housing by $600 or more, if they can find a place at all. At the same time, there is a shortage of housing on many military bases across the country and the waiting lists are long. The difficulties are being felt across the country, not just in high-cost housing markets.
